Mathematics
Mathematics at Moriac Primary school
Mathematics refers to the formal teaching and learning of mathematical knowledge, concepts and skills through the curriculum. This includes areas such as number, algebra, measurement, geometry and statistics.
Numeracy is broader and refers to a student’s ability to apply mathematical understanding confidently in real-world situations — for example interpreting data, budgeting, measuring, problem-solving and using maths in everyday life.
At Moriac Primary School, we see the student through both lenses and create a program where mathematics and numeracy are both at the forefront.
Mathematics at our school is taught through a structured and evidence-based approach aligned with the Victorian Teaching and Learning Model (VTLM 2.0) and our whole-school instructional model.
Through explicit teaching, teachers clearly model mathematical concepts and strategies before guiding students through supported practice and opportunities for independent application. Lessons incorporate retrieval practice and fluency routines to strengthen automatic recall and deepen understanding, while regular checks for understanding enable teachers to monitor progress, provide timely feedback and adjust instruction to meet student needs.
Our Mathematics program promotes problem-solving, reasoning and confidence, ensuring all students are supported to achieve success and develop strong mathematical understanding.
